Tailoring Cat & Dog Vaccinations to Your Pet’s Needs

Our veterinarians understand that each pet is unique, so we develop a custom approach to vaccines for every cat and dog. We’ll start your puppy or kitten off with a vaccination series during their first year of life to boost their immunity to the most common (and dangerous) diseases. Then, when they're an adult, we’ll talk to you about your pet’s lifestyle and recommend an individual vaccine plan that gives them full protection.

Some lifestyle factors we consider include:

  • Whether your pet will be primarily indoors or outdoors
  • How social your pet is (frequent dog park visits, training classes, boarding, etc.)
  • Any travel with your pet and where you’ll go
  • If you hike often with your pet

Here’s a list of our vaccines and when your pet will receive them:

Dog Vaccinations

Rabies is a core vaccine and is required by law in Wisconsin for all dogs.

  • 3-year vaccine after initial series

(distemper, hepatitis, parainfluenza, parvovirus, leptospirosis combo)

DHLPP is highly recommended for all puppies. Adult dogs may not need leptospirosis after their initial series and so will only receive the DHPP booster; however, we often recommend leptospirosis for all dogs due to its prevalence.

  • 3-year vaccine (DHPP only) after initial series
  • 1-year leptospirosis after initial series

Bordetella, or “kennel cough” vaccine is recommended for social dogs. Those who are boarded frequently, visit dog parks or participate in group training benefit from this vaccine.

  • Once yearly

The Lyme disease vaccine gives dogs an extra layer of protection against this tick-borne illness. We recommend this vaccine based on whether or not your pet frequently hikes with you in areas where ticks are widespread.

  • 1-year vaccine after initial series

The canine influenza vaccine (CIV) is recommended for social dogs, similar to those that benefit from Bordetella.

  • 1-year vaccine after initial series

  • 1-year vaccine after initial series
