Veterinary Diagnostics
in Madison, WI
Cats, dogs, and small mammals have a tendency to hide any discomfort or illness. Such behavior would have helped them in the wild, where any sign of illness or injury would make them vulnerable to predators. Yet, in the comfort of your home, their behavior makes recognizing any problems a difficult task for the average pet parent! At Petcare Animal Hospital, we give your pet’s underlying illnesses or injuries a voice with veterinary diagnostics including dogs, cats, and small mammals ultrasound, X-rays, and an in-house lab!

Cat, Dog, & Small Mammal Ultrasound Services
Ultrasound uses soundwaves to create a 2-dimensional image of your pet’s internal organs. We use ultrasound primarily for abdominal issues including:
- Ingested foreign bodies
- Bladder stones
- Fluid build-up
Ultrasound can also be used to evaluate your pet’s internal organs; however, this can be challenging, which is why we work with a specialist who comes in to do more complex ultrasound procedures such as echocardiograms (an ultrasound of the heart).
Digital X-Rays
Digital X-rays help us identify any orthopedics problems your pet may be experiencing as well as problems in the heart and lungs. We may use X-rays in the following cases:
- Suspected fracture
- Limping or change in gait
- Difficulty getting up and down the stairs
- Excessive or prolonged coughing
- Difficulty breathing

In-House Laboratory
With our in-house lab, we’re able to run and receive results for many common diagnostic tests including annual blood and fecal tests. We highly recommend running annual blood work in order to establish a baseline for your pet. Routine blood tests also allow us to more readily detect any signs of illness at an earlier, more treatable stage. Blood work is particularly important to senior pets who are more vulnerable to illness. Meanwhile, annual fecals help us detect any sign of intestinal parasites and to ensure your pet’s parasite prevention is working for them.
